The macula is the central area of the retina and as such is responsible for reading and detailed vision. Damage to the macula can lead to devastating central visual loss limiting ordinary activities such as recognising faces, reading, coin recognition and driving.
Traditionally magnifying 'low visual aids' have been dispensed in order to help patients to cope with this type of visual loss. Many people however find these 'low visual aids' cumbersome and sometimes ineffectual. Up until now there has been little or no provision for true vision enhancement in patients with macula disorders.

Age Related Macular Degeneration |
| Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the number one cause of legal blindness in people over the age of 55 in the UK (and in the Western world). AMD is a common disease of the retina that occurs in some people as part of the aging process. In many cases, AMD causes little to no symptoms, and is never associated with pain. If it progresses, however, it can cause devastating loss of central vision, limiting a person's ability to read the newspaper, recognise faces and drive.
There are two main forms of AMD - "Wet" and "Dry". |
|
"Wet" AMD |
| About 10% of people with AMD develop the "wet" form of the disease. This occurs when abnormal blood vessels develop underneath the macula. These blood vessels leak fluid and blood, and eventually promote scar tissue formation. Wet AMD can progress rapidly and cause serious damage. If it's caught early, however, laser surgery and injections may be able to prevent extensive vision loss. |
|
"Dry" AMD |
| About 90% of people who have AMD have the "dry" form of the disease. However, up until now there has been no effective treatment for the overwhelming majority of these patients who are affected by 'dry' macular degeneration. These unlucky AMD sufferers have previously been told that nothing can be done and that they will gradually lose their sight. |
|
| However, there is a new treatment for AMD, that can improve patients central vision - The IOL Vip system. |
